At one time, the Jogoo Kimakia Bus Service, operating on the central Kenya routes, had more than 100 buses. Owned by Dedan Njoroge Nduati, the bus company had been built by a man who in 1945, was only operating a kiosk.
He saved enough money to purchase a lorry. It was from the small transport business between Murang’a, Thika, and Nairobi that a bus company grew.
In 1957, Mr Nduati approached Credit Finance Corporation for financial assistance and founded the Jogoo Kimakia Bus Company Ltd in 1961. By 1973, he had built a fleet of 80 buses.
He divested from the transport business in the 1980s following stiff competition from matatus.
