So when do we say a person has diabetes
1.when random blood sugar is >11.1mmol/l
2.when fasting blood sugar is >7.0mmol/l

Types of diabetes and their characteristics.
1.type 1 diabetes -Most commonly results from autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic
beta cells leading to absolute insulin deficiency. Insulin is required for
survival.
May present from 6 m onths of a ge b ut usually p resents in c hildhood,
adolescence and young adults. Occasionally Type 1 Diabetes may present
at a later age and this is referred to as Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in
Adults (LADA).
2.Type 2 diabetes:
Characterized by progressive loss of b-cell insulin secretion frequently on the background of insulin resistance. It is the most common type of diabetes.
More common among adults but is increasingly being diagnosed in a
younger population due to overweight/obesity. Many patients withType 2 diabetes are asymptomatic.
3.gestational diabetes mellitus
Diabetes diagnosed in the second or third trimester in a woman who was
previously not known to have diabetes.
It is often asymptomatic, and has to be screened for.
Associated with poor pregnancy outcomes, especially if urecognized and untreated.
It usually resolves after delivery.
4.Other types of Diabetes
These are less common and include genetic disorders, infections, and
diseases of the exocrine pancreas (pancreatitis, Ca pancreas),
endocrinopathies (thyrotoxicosis, Cushing’s syndrome, acromegaly,) .
