Police in Kiambu are holding two suspects for allegedly defrauding a gold investor.

Posing as agents of a Congo-based gold baron, Rogers Kipkogei and Collins Chavera obtained more than Sh1 million from a gold investor after showing him dust from crushed padlocks.

The two were smoked out of their hideout in Kiambu’s estate of Uthiru where police recovered crushed padlocks disguised as gold.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) says the victim fell for the trick and deposited the money to different MPesa accounts given to him by the suspects.

In what detectives believe to be a well-choreographed syndicate, hundreds of SIM cards from local mobile telecommunications networks and stolen identification cards from Kenyans were also recovered from the suspects’ hideout.

Detectives believe the suspects use the personal information from the identification documents, to register the SIM cards used to steal money from unsuspecting victims through mobile money transactions.

The court allowed police to continue holding the two suspects pending further investigations into their modus operandi.
